Etimologie (Engels)

CaCīC-type adjective of the root م و ت (m w t), reconstructible to an original form *مَوِيت (*mawīt, “dead”) that would have then assimilated to *مَيِيت (*mayīt, “good”) and finally regularly shifted to مَيِّت (mayyit, “dead”). See etymology at جَيِّد (jayyid, “good”) for more information. In the case of مَيِّت (mayyit, “dead”), the plural مَوْتَى (mawtā) provides additional support for the reconstruction *مَوِيت (*mawīt, “dead”) by indicating that the original paradigm was *مَوِيت (*mawīt) pl. *مَوْتَى (*mawtā), exactly the same as other CaCīC pl. CaCCā items like مَرِيض (marīḍ, “sick”) pl. مَرْضَى (marḍā) and قَتِيل (qatīl, “slain”) pl. قَتْلَى (qatlā).
